However, what does it mean if your gums are sore or irritated? There could be everyday things that you are doing that are causing this. Continue reading to learn about some of the most common ways that people develop sore, uncomfortable gum tissue and what you can do about it.

Incorrect Flossing

When was the last time you flossed? Brushing alone isn’t enough to prevent cavities and gum disease. Flossing is necessary to remove food debris and plaque from between the teeth. If you don’t floss, you are at increased risk of gum disease. This occurs when oral bacteria accumulate near the gums and wreak havoc. This can result in red, sensitive, inflamed gum tissue. Even if you are flossing regularly, if you aren’t thorough, you could see similar issues. To avoid this, gently guide the floss between your teeth and floss up against both sides of your teeth beneath the gumline to clear away plaque. You should do this once a day.

Vigorous Brushing

It is important to brush twice a day to keep your teeth clean and prevent oral health issues. However, if you are doing so too vigorously, you could run into some issues. This includes enamel erosion and gum recession. You don’t need to apply much pressure when you brush your teeth. Use small, gentle circles to clear away food, plaque, and bacteria. Remember to always choose a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Irritating Foods

When you eat lots of crunchy, sharp foods, you could accidentally harm your gum tissue. For example, if you are eating popcorn, small pieces of popcorn from around the kernel can poke into your gum tissue or even become lodged, causing irritation. Chopping on crunchy tortilla chips can poke at your gum tissue. Alternatively, choosing foods and beverages with a lot of sugar can feed the bacteria in your mouth, causing them to multiple along the gumline. Choose your snacks with caution.

Over-the-Counter Teeth Whitening Products

Everyone wants to show off a bright, white smile. However, not every treatment is ideal for your oral health. Trays and strips that you buy over the counter aren’t customized for you, so they are more likely to make contact with your gum tissue and cause irritation. If you are interested in whitening your teeth, talk to your dentist about safer alternatives to help you achieve your goals.

If your gums are irritated, it is always best to reach out to your dentist. This way, they can examine your smile and give you the best advice to meet your needs.

About the Practice

Dr. Meredith Todd and Dr. Roshni Bhatt work together to treat patients in the Cambridge community.
