Laser Dentistry Methods

Fotona Lightwalker

The Fotona Lightwalker combines two different wavelengths (neodymium and erbium) that work together as an extremely powerful and versatile laser in our office. It has a long list of applications, from cavity preparation and sensitive tooth treatments to wrinkle reduction and more!

Twinlight Periodontal Therapy

Twinlight uses both the Lightwalker's hard- and soft-tissue lasers, what we call dual laser wavelength therapy. The Nd:YAG laser removes diseased tissue, targets bacteria, and creates a fibrin glue for gum reattachment. The Er:YAG laser is used to remove the calcified deposits on the root surface, modify bone, and remove the smear layer on the teeth for greater bone regeneration. Bone grafts, growth factors, and barrier membranes can be used with these therapies for optimal results.

Gum Recontouring and Crown Lengthening

Gum recontouring and crown lengthening can be either aesthetic or functional. Gum sculpting can be done to lengthen short teeth and correct asymmetries. Sometimes crown lengthening makes an extremely broken-down tooth restorable when it otherwise would require extraction. Using the laser for these procedures makes them less painful, more predictable, and shortens the healing time.

Frenectomy

A frenectomy removes muscle and connective tissue attachments in the mouth when they cause problems for a patient. Sometimes strong muscle attachments can create orthodontic, periodontal, and speech problems. Removal of the attachment can help. This includes “tongue-ties” and other tethered tissues. Depending on the patient, myofunctional therapy may be needed as well. The functional releases can be done with the laser in our office with minimal anesthesia, no sutures, and faster healing than traditional scalpel frenectomies.

Fotona Lightwalker

The Fotona Lightwalker has applications beyond Laser Dentistry, such as cold sore and ulcer treatment, biopsies, hemangioma removal, and aesthetic skin treatments, such as:

Sleep Apnea and Snoring Treatment

Nightlase is a safe and non-surgical method to minimize snoring and improve obstructive sleep apnea. Nightlase uses the Fotona Lightwalker laser to heat the loose tissue that blocks airflow to shrink it and stimulate new, tighter tissue collagen. The treatments take approximately 20 minutes and are done 3-4 weeks apart. The number of treatments needed is patient-dependent, but at least three are necessary.

Nightlase is gentle, safe, and usually pain-free. Patients compare the procedure's feeling to heat and a rubber band's light snap. There is no cutting, no scarring, and no anesthesia needed.

Photobiomodulation

Photobiomodulation (PBM) uses low-level, visible-red to near-infrared light energy, stimulating cells to heal, relieve pain, and naturally reduce inflammation. The process results in accelerated tissue regeneration, stimulation of cell metabolism, increased lymphatic flow, and stimulation of micro-circulation. We frequently use PBM to supplement TMJ treatment or accelerate healing and reduce downtime after dental surgeries.

Smoothlase

Smoothlase uses laser energy to induce collagen formation, which results in skin tightening and smoothing wrinkles around the mouth and nose. This treatment can be done without downtime using an intraoral approach to tighten sagging skin and jowls. Although the process is not painful, it feels like heat and potentially some mild rubber band snaps. It is done as a series of sessions customized to the patient, and collagen builds over the coming weeks and months.

Liplase

Liplase uses the Fotona Lightwalker to stimulate new collagen growth in the lips for non-surgical lip plumping without needles or foreign fillers. There is no bruising and no downtime. The procedure takes at least three treatments, and collagen builds slowly over a period of months. The treatments take about 10 minutes and are done 3-4 weeks apart. Touch-up sessions are generally done every six months. To learn more about laser dentistry in Cambridge, patients should call us at (410) 228-5445 to schedule a consultation.
