Heading out on a flight can be stressful enough, but if you’ve recently had a dental emergency, it can make things a lot more complicated. If you’re scheduled to take off soon but recently had a tooth extraction, here’s why it’s important to wait.

Why You Shouldn’t Fly After Tooth Extraction

Unless you’ll be piloting the plane, it may not seem like it’s that dangerous to fly immediately after a having a tooth pulled. But the truth is that the pressure changes your body experiences as the plane increases its elevation could cause the pain in your extraction site to worsen, or even a dangerous condition called dry socket.

What is Dry Socket?

Dry socket occurs when the clot in your extraction site becomes dislodged, exposing the jawbone and increasing your risk of infection. When this occurs, it is important to see your dentist right away. Unfortunately, if you’re headed on a flight out of town, you may not be able to do this as easily!

How Can I Prevent Dry Socket?

The good news is that dry socket is certainly preventable, however it is important that you adhere to your dentist’s aftercare instructions following a tooth extraction to avoid it. First, be sure not to touch the clot with your fingers, tongue, or toothbrush. Do not drink from a straw for at least one week after your tooth is pulled, and don’t spit, as the force can dislodge the clot, too.

If you must take a flight soon after your procedure, it is important to wait at least 48 hours, and to avoid things like physical activity or anything that would expose you to pressure changes during that time.

Remember, while unexpected work travel is common, and dental emergencies don’t always happen at the most convenient times, the first 48 hours after a tooth extraction are an important time for healing. Thus, avoid activities like flying that could injure your socket and dislodge your blood clot. If your procedure cannot wait until after your trip, it is recommended that you delay your flight by at least a few days to ensure you are healthy enough to travel, and so that your mouth heals without any painful and unnecessary complications.
