Most people think of their health in different categories: their physical, mental, and dental health. Although you can separate them in this way, it’s important to remember that they’re still connected, some more closely than you may think. For example, take your dental and mental health. You might not realize it, but gum disease, one of the most common oral health issues among adults, has been shown to impact your mental health and vice versa. Learn why that is by reading below.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a dental health problem that affects one out of every two adults in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It’s an infection caused by an accumulation of harmful oral bacteria along the gumline and within the pockets of the gums at the base of the teeth. In its earliest stage (gingivitis) the disease can be treated and even reversed, often causing less severe symptoms like bad breath and bleeding gums. However, when left to progress into periodontitis, the effects can become more severe and lead to permanent oral damage like tooth loss.

How Does Gum Disease Affect Your Mental & Emotional Health?

Gum disease has been connected to a number of health concerns, including an increased risk of Alzheimer’s, stroke, and cardiovascular problems. However, what many people don’t know is that it’s also connected to your mental health.

In an analysis of studies conducted over 25 years, researchers found that people living with severe mental health concerns were 2.8 times more likely to have experienced tooth loss due to untreated health conditions, chief among them gum disease.  Additionally, gum disease has been shown to be exacerbated by stress. It is also connected to worsening social anxiety and isolation due to fear of being judged by peers.

What Should You Do if You Have Gum Disease?

The good news is that, if you have gum disease, you can receive treatment that targets the source of the infection to prevent tooth loss and worsening symptoms. With thorough and effective treatments, like a deep cleaning and good at-home oral care, you can preserve your smile and with it, your mental health. However, it’s also fair if you don’t feel up to or can’t make many big changes in your life due to depression, anxiety, or other mental health concerns. Just remember that making even small steps can have a big difference!

If you notice the early signs of gum disease, like bleeding gums when you brush or floss your teeth or chronic bad breath, be sure to alert your dentist at your next checkup and cleaning. They will measure your gum depth and recommend appropriate measures to protect your oral health and prevent the issue from progressing.
